The Opportunity

We are recruiting a reliable and experienced Temp Head Chef to lead the kitchen at a busy children’s nursery in Macclesfield. This role requires someone who can plan and deliver nutritious, well-balanced meals for young children, manage a small kitchen team, and maintain excellent food safety and allergen standards. The position is temporary with flexible shift patterns in line with the nursery’s hours and term-time patterns.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day kitchen operations, preparing breakfasts, lunches, and snacks in line with nutritional guidelines for early years

• Plan and prepare varied, child-friendly menus that meet dietary and allergen requirements

• Lead and supervise a small kitchen team, including kitchen assistants and kitchen-porters

• Maintain rigorous food hygiene, storage, and cleaning standards; complete required records and checklists

• Manage basic stock control, receive deliveries, and report low-stock items

• Support menu costing, portion control, and minimising waste while maintaining quality

• Provide training and induction for temporary or support staff when required

• Communicate effectively with nursery management regarding dietary needs, special requirements, and menu changes

About You

• Relevant catering experience, ideally within a nursery, school, or other education setting, or in institutional/high-volume catering

• Proven experience in a supervisory or head chef role, able to lead a small team

• Valid Food Hygiene certification (Level 2 or above preferred)

• Knowledge of allergen management, nutrition for young children, and safe portioning

• Strong organisational skills with the ability to work to timetables and adapt to term-time schedules

• Reliable, punctual, and able to remain calm under pressure

• Enhanced DBS check required (or willingness to obtain one)

• Positive, inclusive approach and commitment to providing excellent service for children and staff
