About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced and caring Head Chef to join a busy children’s nursery in Preston. This role offers a rate of £19.61 per hour and responsibility for planning and delivering nutritious, balanced meals that meet the needs of infants and young children while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene.

What You’ll Be Doing
As Head Chef you will lead the nursery kitchen and be accountable for all aspects of meal provision. Your key duties will include:
Planning weekly menus that are nutritionally appropriate for different age groups and compliant with nursery dietary policies.
Preparing, cooking, and presenting healthy, child-friendly meals and snacks using fresh ingredients.
Managing special dietary requirements and allergies with care and precision, ensuring accurate labeling and cross-contamination prevention.
Leading and supervising kitchen staff, including training and developing team members to maintain consistent quality.
Maintaining strict food hygiene, safety, and cleaning standards in line with current regulations.
Managing stock control, ordering supplies, and keeping accurate records of food costs and wastage.
Collaborating with nursery management and childcare staff to align meal times and routines with children’s needs.
Role Expectations
As Head Chef you will be expected to:
Develop and implement menus that support healthy growth and development.
Ensure all kitchen operations are compliant with food safety legislation and nursery safeguarding practices.
Organise rotas and supervise kitchen staff to provide consistent, reliable service.
Communicate clearly with childcare teams and parents regarding dietary information and menu plans.
What We’re Looking For
Previous experience working in a childcare or nursery kitchen, or strong experience in a similar catering environment.
Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate (minimum) and proven allergen awareness.
Excellent knowledge of nutrition for young children and experience managing special diets and allergies.
Strong leadership skills, reliable work ethic, and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
Good communication and teamwork skills; a safeguarding-aware approach is essential.
A DBS check is desirable or willingness to obtain one as required by the nursery.
