Job Title: Cook / Head Cook (Care Home Setting)
Location: Bishops Stortford
Pay/Salary: £15.00 – £15.50 per hour (higher rates available if stepping into a Head Cook role following probation)
Hours: 36+ hours per week – Shifts available: 07:00–14:30 / 14:00–19:00 / 07:00–19:00 / 09:00–19:00
Contract: Full-time or Part-time
Driving Required: Yes (due to rural location)

About the Role

Our client is a family-run residential care home supporting up to 27 older adults, including those requiring end-of-life care. Mealtimes play a vital role in residents’ wellbeing, and the quality of food makes a real difference in their daily lives. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Cook to join the team, with the opportunity to progress to Head Cook following a successful probation period.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and serve nutritious, balanced meals tailored to residents’ needs
• Adapt meals for special dietary requirements (e.g., allergies, soft diets, fortified meals)
• Ensure meals are presented well and create a positive mealtime experience
• Collaborate with the care team to meet residents’ personal and cultural preferences
• Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant kitchen environment
• Manage stock, order supplies, and reduce food waste
• Support special events, themed meals, and family occasions within the home
• Follow health & safety procedures and maintain accurate records

Candidate Requirements

• Food Hygiene Level 2 (minimum requirement)
• At least 2 years of experience in a care home kitchen
• Must be a driver due to rural location
• Passionate about food and enhancing residents’ quality of life
• Flexible, reliable, and organised with excellent communication skills
• Creative and confident in preparing varied meals and “specials of the day”
• Able to work mornings, evenings, and alternate weekends
